When to Visit Costa Del Sol

Choosing the right time to visit Costa del Sol is important for maximizing your enjoyment of this stunning destination.

Weather in Costa Del Sol in the winter

We were there in January and February and those were not the most ideal months to stay in Costa Del Sol.

From December to February it is winter in Costa Del Sol and it is the least crowded time to visit (I liked that!). Temperature was around 15-20°C (59-68°F), making it perfect for exploring cultural attractions and enjoying scenic hikes.

Even though it was winter and a bit more chilly than the other months of the year, for me the weather was excellent! It was sunny and I would say most of the time we were ok with t-shirt and long pants. Although some days it got a bit more chilly and we needed to have coats as well.

Weather in Costa Del Sol in the spring and in the fall

For a more relaxed experience with milder temperatures and fewer crowds, consider visiting in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November).

During these shoulder seasons, temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), and you can still enjoy outdoor activities without the summer crowds.

Weather in Costa Del Sol in the summer

If you’re looking to soak up the sun and enjoy water activities, the summer months from June to August are ideal time to travel, with temperatures averaging around 30°C (86°F).

However, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices during this peak tourist season.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Costa del Sol depends on your preferences and interests, so choose the season that suits you best for an unforgettable experience.

  • Explore Charming Villages: Take a scenic drive through the picturesque whitewashed villages dotted throughout the region such as Mijas Pueblo, Frigiliana and Nerja. We were lucky enough to visit all of those beautiful small villages and I would say Frigiliana stole my heart.
  • Visit Historic Landmarks: Discover the rich history and culture of Costa del Sol by visiting historic landmarks such as the Alcazaba fortress in Malaga, the bridge of Ronda, and the Nerja Caves. We visited the Nerja caves and I can say it was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had! So I highly recommend it.

With stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, this unique territory offers visitors a blend of British and Spanish influences, along with diverse wildlife and cultural attractions to explore.
  • Visit the Fuengirola Market. Every Tuesday, local farmers come to sell their products at the Fuengirola market. They were so much cheaper than in Finland too!

How to find cheap flights to Malaga?

Finding cheap flights to Malaga can be achievable with some strategic planning and savvy tips. I love to search for cheap flights and I’m more than happy to share with you my tips. So here are some suggestions to help you snag a bargain:

  • Be Flexible with Dates: Being flexible with your travel dates can significantly impact the cost of your flight. Use fare comparison websites or airline search engines that allow you to view prices across a range of dates to identify the cheapest options.
  • Book in Advance: Generally, booking your flight well in advance can lead to lower prices. Aim to book your flight at least a few months ahead of your intended travel dates to secure the best deals.
  • Consider Alternative Airports: In addition to Malaga Airport (AGP), explore nearby airports such as Gibraltar Airport (GIB) or Faro Airport (FAO) in Portugal. Sometimes, flying into a nearby airport and taking ground transportation to Malaga can be more economical.
  • Sign Up for Alerts: Set up fare alerts on flight comparison websites or subscribe to airline newsletters to receive notifications about price drops or special promotions.
  • Use Airline Miles or Points: If you’re a frequent flyer or have accumulated airline miles or points through credit card rewards programs, consider using them to offset the cost of your flight or to book discounted fares.
  • Travel Off-Peak: Avoiding peak travel times, such as holidays and weekends, can often result in lower airfares. Consider traveling during weekdays or shoulder seasons when demand is lower.
  • Be Open to Connecting Flights: Direct flights to Malaga can be more expensive than flights with layovers or connections. Be open to connecting flights, as they may offer significant cost savings.
  • Clear Browser Cookies: Some websites may track your browsing history and raise prices accordingly. Clear your browser cookies or use incognito mode when searching for flights to ensure you’re seeing the lowest possible fares.
  • Negotiate or Haggle: If booking through a travel agent or airline directly, don’t hesitate to negotiate for a better price or inquire about any available discounts or promotions.

How to find affordable accommodation from Costa Del Sol?

Finding affordable accommodation in Costa Del Sol can be achievable, although the prices will vary depending on when you are going. I personally want to find great hotel deals that are both affordable and very good – and I must say that I am pretty good at finding those deals. So here are some suggestions to help you find a budget-friendly place to stay:

  • Book in Advance: Just like with flights, booking your accommodation well in advance can often lead to better deals. Aim to book your hotel or rental property as early as possible to secure lower rates.
  • Compare Prices: Use hotel booking websites, vacation rental platforms, and price comparison tools to compare prices across different accommodations in Costa Del Sol. Look for special promotions, discounts, or last-minute deals that can offer significant savings.
  • Stay Outside Popular Areas: Consider staying in accommodations located slightly outside of popular tourist areas or beachfront locations. These options often offer lower rates while still providing easy access to attractions and amenities.
  • Travel Off-Peak: If possible, plan your trip during the shoulder season or off-peak times when demand for accommodation is lower. You’re likely to find better deals and lower rates during these times compared to peak tourist seasons.
  • Consider Alternative Accommodations: Explore a variety of accommodation options beyond traditional hotels, such as guesthouses, hostels, bed and breakfasts, or vacation rentals. These alternatives can often be more budget-friendly while still offering comfortable and enjoyable stays.
  • Be Flexible with Dates: Flexibility with your travel dates can also impact the cost of accommodation. If your travel dates are flexible, consider adjusting them slightly to take advantage of lower rates or special promotions.
  • Negotiate or Haggle: If booking directly with a hotel or rental property, don’t hesitate to negotiate for a better rate, especially if you’re booking for an extended stay or during a quieter period. This is what I do a lot – I contact the hotel directly and ask for a deal!
  • Use Rewards or Loyalty Programs: If you’re a member of hotel loyalty programs or have accumulated travel rewards through credit card programs, consider using them to offset the cost of your accommodation or to book discounted rates.
  • Read Reviews and Research: Before booking accommodation, read reviews from previous guests and thoroughly research the property to ensure it meets your budget and expectations. Look for hidden fees or additional charges that could impact the overall cost of your stay.

I personally use Booking.com quite a lot. They have a loyalty program that offers 10% off the price. I’ve also noticed that sometimes the prices are better in Booking.com than if you book directly from the hotel!

By reading reviews you will also know what the other guests have liked and disliked – if there are comments about things you absolutely don’t want (a noisy hotel, bad smells, bad customer service, poor food quality) I suggest avoiding that hotel.
