Growing up in Lapland, Finland, I was lucky to experience the magic of this Arctic wonderland firsthand. From dark snowy winters to summer days where the sun never sets, Lapland is a place that has always felt like home to me.
Now, each year, I return every summer to Rovaniemi and experience it’s beautiful nature, Midnight Sun and the lovely and peaceful atmosphere.
I love visiting Lapland in the summer and there are many pros to that (including cheaper accomodation prices!), but there are a lot reasons (such as the magical Northern Lights) why you should visit Lapland in the winter as well.
In this post, I’ll guide you through the different seasons of Lapland so you can decide what is the best time to visit Lapland for your family.
Why Visit Lapland?
Visiting Lapland is a unique experience that offers a magical blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and thrilling adventures.
Whether you want to explore snowy landscapes under the shimmering Northern Lights, indulge in exciting winter activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling, or basking in the endless daylight of summer under the Midnight Sun, Lapland has something for everyone.
Winter Wonderland (from December to March)
Winter in Finnish Lapland is cold, dark, but so magical with snowy landscapes! If you want to visit Lapland’s winter wonderland you should visit Lapland from December to March.
During this time, the snow-covered landscapes and frosty forests set the stage for unforgettable experiences. Although, sometimes there’s an early winter and the snow comes already in late November or even in October. So you never know!
This is the best season to witness the spectacular Northern Lights, with the long, dark nights providing the perfect backdrop for the dazzling Aurora Borealis.
Rovaniemi, which is my hometown and also known as the official hometown of Santa Claus, draws families from all over the world, bringing festive charm and holiday spirit to life. This is why many people want to visit Lapland during the Christmas time.
Besides Santa Claus, there’s also the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi and many people want to visit Santa Claus Village, where they can experience both of those.
Despite the freezing temperatures and limited daylight, winter in Lapland is for sure a magical experience!
Winter Activities
Popular winter activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and reindeer sleigh rides immerse visitors in the Arctic wilderness. You can also try some winter sports such as cross country skiing, ice skating or snowboarding. By the way, if you love skiing, check out world’s best ski resorts for beginners!
The Polar Nights
Have you heard of polar nights? Polar nights occur in the Arctic regions, including parts of Lapland, during winter when the sun does not rise above the horizon for an extended period.
In Lapland region, polar nights typically last from early December to early January. The farther north you go, the longer the polar night lasts.
For example, in areas like Rovaniemi, you might experience a few hours of twilight, but in the northernmost parts of Lapland, such as in Utsjoki, it can remain completely dark for weeks. Despite the darkness, this period is ideal for seeing the Northern Lights.
Spring Awakening (from April to May)
Spring in Lapland, from April to May, is a season of transition as the Arctic landscape begins to awaken from its long winter season.
The days get longer, the weather warms up, and the snow begins to melt, but you can still feel the magic of winter in early spring.
April is the last chance to see the Northern Lights before the midnight sun arrives. Even as the snow starts to disappear, you can still enjoy outdoor activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing, but with fewer tourists.
The spring equinox, which occurs late March, (around March 20th), marks the moment when day and night are nearly equal in length.
It signals the official start of spring, as the Earth’s tilt brings more sunlight to the northern hemisphere.
In places like Lapland, the spring equinox is especially significant because it marks the transition from long, dark winter nights to lengthening daylight. It’s also one of the last opportunities to catch the Northern Lights before the bright Arctic days of summer begin.
As spring arrives, the first signs of green start to show, making it a peaceful and beautiful time to visit Lapland.
Midnight Sun and Summer Adventures (from June to August)
Summer in Lapland, from June to August, is a time of endless daylight, thanks to the Midnight Sun, where the sun stays visible around the clock.
This natural phenomenon allows for long, adventure-filled days in the great outdoors. With milder temperatures reaching a pleasant 10°C to 20°C, it’s perfect for hiking through lush forests, mountain biking, kayaking on pristine lakes, or fishing in rivers teeming with life.

As the temperatures cool and the days shorten, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows during the Ruska season, which is Lapland’s version of fall foliage.
This is also one of the best times to witness the Northern Lights, as the darker nights return.
With fewer tourists, autumn offers a quiet and tranquil experience. There are still many activities such as hiking, berry picking, or simply enjoying the crisp air and the peaceful surroundings.
It’s an ideal time for those seeking a calm retreat and a glimpse of nature’s stunning transition before winter sets in.
